Letter, Cadiz, to Henry Cope, 1834 July 8.

Has escaped the pestilence that is cholera, raging on all sides; traveled to a town north of Cadiz to visit a Carthusian convent and to the place where the battle was fought which turned Spain over to the Moors. As robbers abound, he carried American cigars and Spanish dollars rather than weapons. Sherry a big business at Port St. Mary. Foreign goods are imported into Cadiz with considerable duty imposed, which results in considerable smuggling; great sums of money spent on construction of a cathedral. Would like to procure seeds of a hazelnut tree that he had not seen at home. Has collected some Spanish marble to bring home.
